The one in the (user-homedir-pathname) should be loaded as well as one in the gdl/ installation directory (the parent of gdl/program/ --- if it exists).

Recommended practice is to customize the one in the (user-homedir-pathname) so it will not be overwritten or need to be re-edited when updating GDL versions or re-installing GDL. (The recommendation in general is to treat the installation directory as read-only).

I have a gdlinit.cl in the gdl/program directory, because the installation by default put one there. I'd overwritten that one. Shouldn't you then put the gdlinit.cl in the parent directory, because it was natural for me to customize the one in gdl/program....

Agreed. The one in the gdl/program directory should be moved up a level in our installation, and it should be empty (or commented out) by default. This will be corrected for next release.
