## Degree Description:

The Master of Science in Mathematics is offered at Washington State University, along with an Applied Mathematics Option, a Computational Finance Option, and a Mathematics Teaching Option. In all of our degree programs we combine a sound general core of fundamental mathematics with electives that reflect individual interests, needs, and opportunities. Each track allows for specialization within the field of mathematics, but all establish a general foundation that should be valuable to students in any mathematical work they do.

## Admission Requirements:

For international students, either a TOEFL or IETLS score is required; recommended TOEFL score of 100 and IELTS of 7. Exceptions can be found here: https://gradschool.wsu.edu/international-requirements/

The application will require:

- Unofficial transcripts from all previous institutions.
- GPA above a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Resume/cv.
- Email contact information for 3 references.
- Personal statement. The personal statement is your chance to highlight relevant experiences and discuss your future research interests.
- GRE scores are not required but encouraged.

Unfortunately, graduate assistantships with the Department of Math and Stats are generally unavailable for Master’s students, and accepted students will normally be required to pay tuition to WSU.

## Student Learning Outcomes:

All graduates will be able to:

- Problem Solving: Students will be able to identify mathematical and computational methods in order to solve problems.
- Deductive Thinking: Students will be able to read and write logical arguments in order to prove advanced mathematical results.
- Effective Communication: Students will be able to effectively communicate mathematical concepts, problems and their solutions in written and oral form.

## Student Opportunities:

Depending upon the student’s interests, students may take an internship at various business or agencies, and students may apply to attend National or regional meetings in their field of interest.

## Career Opportunities:

The majority of our MS graduates find positions as analysts in research, data science, risk management, actuarial science, and finance in a wide variety of industries and fields. Our MS graduates also go on to programming or tech positions in business and government, PhD programs, or teach undergraduate courses at community colleges or universities.
